Police Commissioner Bill Bratton has ordered retraining for officers, after a Staten Island man died while being arrested last week.
“There will be a retraining of every member of the New York City Police Department in the weeks, months and potential years ahead,” Bratton said.
There will also be a top of bottom review of the NYPD training procedures, specifically the use of force.
Eric Garner died last week after an NYPD officer put him in a chokehold while trying to arrest him for selling untaxed cigarettes. That’s sparked community outrage, with dozens of people marching yesterday in support of Garner.
A funeral for Garner is scheduled for later today on Staten Island.
