City Council to Vote on Raising Legal Age to Purchase Cigarettes
Posted October 30th, 2013 @ 7:53am

The City Council will vote on Wednesday on a proposed bill that would raise the minimum smoking age in NYC to 21-years-old. The provision is the latest initiative from Mayor Bloomberg aiming to curb smoking.

If the bill is passed, NYC will become the first major city to raise the legal smoking age from 18 to 21. The proposal also includes increasing the legal smoking age for electronic cigarettes.

The bill; however, targets retailers instead of the actual smokers. According to CBS New York, if a retailer were to violate the proposed law, then they would be subject to a fine of up to $1,000 for each violation found in a single day and $2,000 for a second violation. Retailers could also lose their license to sell tobacco products.
