De Blasio Delivers State of the City Address

Posted February 11th, 2014 @ 10:55am

Mayor Bill de Blasio wants to make sure all New Yorkers receive a “fair shot.”

In his first State of the City address yesterday, de Blasio outlined a progressive agenda.

It included a call for universal pre-k, which the mayor wants to fund with a tax on those earning $500,000 a year.  That proposal has met resistance from Albany, but the mayor is continuing his fight.

"We’re simply asking Albany to allow New York City to tax itself," de Blasio said.

The mayor also proposed an increase in the minimum wage, plus city ID cards.  That would help illegal immigrants open bank accounts, get a library card and take advantage of services where photo identification is necessary.

“We will not force any of our residents to live their lives in the shadows,” de Blasio said.

It was Mayor de Blasio’s first major speech since his inauguration.  He is scheduled to unveil his budget plan on Wednesday.
