Fireworks Show Returning to East River

The Macy's Fourth of July Fireworks show is moving back to the East River this year.

Since 2009, the Hudson River has been home to the fireworks show.  That's angered many in Brooklyn, who argued residents of New Jersey had a better view of the show than they did.

Mayor Bill de Blasio lives in Brooklyn and pushed for the show to be moved back to Manhattan's east side.  He called it a priority and said this will allow more New Yorkers to see the annual spectacle.

The New York Post says the move will mean an extra $500,000 in security costs.  Mayor de Blasio says the $1.9 million cost is "well worth it."

The fireworks show was moved to the Hudson River in 2009 to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Henry Hudson's voyage up the river.  The show has remained on Manhattan's west side for the past five years.

Officials said the East River won't be the permanent home for the fireworks display.  But Mayor de Blasio prefers the new location and said he hopes to make this "as frequent as possible."
