Imminent Long Island College Hospital Closure Sparks Protests

(Lauren Evans) Despite court orders, Long Island College Hospital in Cobble Hill is closing its doors, with plans to have all remaining patients transferred from the condemned health center this weekend. The hospital's losses are totaling $15 million each month, Crain's reports, nearly quadruple that of prior estimates. Still, residents and politicians are livid about how the issue has been handled.

"For six months, SUNY has been claiming it has to close LICH. And for six months everyone—the state, the courts, health care providers, the community, and all of Brooklyn —have said absolutely not," reads a statement from State Sen. Daniel Squadron's office, on behalf of half a dozen other elected officials.

Public Advocate and mayoral candidate Bill de Blasio, who along with City Councilman Stephen Levin was arrested last week for disorderly conduct while protesting the hospital's closure, blamed SUNY and the governor for prioritizing financial gain over the needs of the community.
