NYC's Obesity Rate Up 25% Under Mayor Bloomberg
Posted September 30th, 2013 @ 2:35pm

In what could be seen as a big blow to Mayor Bloomberg's legacy, according to statistics obtained by the New York Post, there are more obese New Yorkers now than there were when Bloomberg took office in 2002. The numbers from the city's Health Department, show that the city's obesity rate has jumped 25 percent since Bloomberg's tenure as mayor began.

According to the report from the NY Post, these numbers seem to contradict other data showing an increase in the number of New Yorkers who are physically active and eating vegetables, as well as numbers showing a drop in the percentage of New Yorkers drinking one or more sugary drinks a day. Since becoming mayor, Bloomberg has implemented or tried to implement a number of health initiatives, including more bike lanes, healthier school lunches and the controversial proposed ban on large sugary drinks.
