The Outsiders
The Outsiders
In 1976, vocalist/guitarist Adrian Borland, bassist Bob Lawrence, and drummer Adrian Janes formed the Outsiders, one of the original British punk bands. Fittingly named, even by punk's by-the-numbers standards, the trio were often sniffed upon by the remainder of the scene for having longer hair and more formal education in their backgrounds. With financial help from Borland's supportive parents, the band pressed 1000 copies of their debut Calling on Youth and released it in June of 1977 through their own Raw Edge label. Borland's worship of the Stooges and the Velvet Underground permeated their material, much of which had been committed to tape prior to the revelation of the Sex Pistols. In fact, during an encore performance of "Raw Power" at the infamous Roxy, Iggy Pop jumped on stage to join the band, which quickly became one of the greatest highs of Borland's accomplished career. The One to Infinity EP followed shortly after the release of the debut. The darker Close Up was issued in early 1979, also on Raw Edge. At some point prior to breaking up that year, Graham Bailey joined the fold. Borland and Bailey continued working together in the Sound. ~ Andy Kellman, Rovi
